What is the Buteyko effect?

The Buteyko effect is the scientific formula that explains why a decrease in a person's resting respiratory volume (RVr) leads to better health and fitness and the reversal of symptoms of chronic disease over time. The Buteyko effect is named after Professor K.P. Buteyko

The Buteyko effect is a chain of 9 strong causal relationships, beginning with a decrease in a resting person's minute respiratory volume (MVr) and ending with improvements in health, fitness and symptoms of chronic disease.


The 9 causal relations in more detail:

MVr ↓ → PACO2 ↑

When resting minute respiratory volume (RVM) decreases, the CO2 content of the pulmonary alveoli (PACO2) increases.

PACO2 ↑ → PaCO2 ↑

As the CO2 content of the alveoli (PACO2) increases, the partial pressure of CO2 in the arterial blood (PaCO2) increases.

PaCO2 ↑ → Blood pH ↓

When the partial pressure of CO2 in arterial blood (PaCO2) increases, the pH of the blood decreases.

Blood pH ↓ → Hb-O2 affinity ↓

As the pH of the blood decreases, the hemoglobin-oxygen affinity (Hb-O2 affinity) decreases.

PaCO2 ↑ → Affinity Hb-O2 ↓

As the partial pressure of CO2 in arterial blood (PaCO2) increases, the hemoglobin-oxygen affinity (Hb-O2 affinity) decreases.

Affinity Hb-O2 ↓ → SvO2 ↓

When hemoglobin-oxygen affinity (Hb-O2 affinity) decreases, venous blood oxygen saturation (SvO2) decreases.

SvO2 ↓ → diff a-vO2 ↑

When venous blood oxygen saturation (SvO2) decreases, the arteriovenous oxygen difference (diff a-vO2) increases.

a-vO2 diff ↑ → VO2 ↑

As the difference in arteriovenous oxygen (diff a-vO2) increases, the consumption of oxygen (VO2) increases.

VO2 ↑ → Health ↑ and fitness ↑ and chronic disease ↓

When oxygen (VO2) consumption increases, general health and fitness improve and symptoms of chronic disease disappear.

THE Rates



The complete advanced Buteyko course consists of 7 individual support sessions. We will keep the dates of the support sessions flexible as it may sometimes be preferable to keep a few extra days between sessions to gain more practical experience doing the exercises.
